The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democratic consolidation, describing the country’s political journey as one driven by resilience, citizen participation and ongoing institutional reforms.

In its Democracy Day message, the Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, said Nigeria’s democracy continues to evolve through the active engagement of citizens, stronger institutions and expanding spaces for civic participation.

He noted that Democracy Day offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the end of military rule and the sustained efforts by citizens to deepen democratic governance.

“Democracy is not a single moment. It is a movement,” Mignot said, stressing that democratic governance is sustained through dialogue, participation and accountability rather than electoral cycles alone.

According to him, democracy thrives when citizens are actively involved in shaping decisions, institutions function transparently, and public discourse remains peaceful and inclusive.

He observed that Nigeria’s democratic experience has been shaped by continuous reform efforts and the determination of citizens to demand accountability from leaders at all levels.

Mignot highlighted the increasing participation of women, youth and civil society groups in governance processes, describing it as a positive indicator of democratic growth.

“Across Nigeria and in spite of many challenges, democracy continues to grow through resilience, reform and inclusion,” he said.

The EU envoy reaffirmed that the European Union remains a committed partner in Nigeria’s democratic journey through various cooperation frameworks and support programmes.

He referenced the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme, which he said is designed to strengthen institutions, improve participation and enhance electoral integrity.

According to him, the programme continues to support Nigeria’s electoral bodies, civil society organisations and governance institutions in areas such as civic engagement, institutional learning and electoral process improvement.

Mignot also noted the EU’s collaboration with the National Peace Committee and other stakeholders in promoting peaceful elections and strengthening national cohesion before, during and after polls.

He added that the EU remains engaged in supporting reforms in the justice sector, legislative processes and policy dialogue aimed at improving accountability and adherence to the rule of law.

The ambassador further stressed the importance of inclusion in democratic systems, saying meaningful democracy must reflect the voices of women, young people and persons with disabilities.

He also highlighted the role of independent media, civic information platforms and fact-checking networks in strengthening public trust and democratic discourse in a rapidly evolving digital environment.

“Because democracy depends on participation, on accountability, on peaceful dialogue, and on citizens believing their voices still matter,” he said.

Mignot expressed optimism about Nigeria’s democratic future, pointing to growing civic awareness in schools, communities, media spaces and among young Nigerians determined to shape national development.

He added that through the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, the bloc would continue to invest in partnerships aimed at expanding opportunities, strengthening participation and supporting long-term resilience.

The envoy urged Nigerians to remain committed to democratic values, noting that democracy must be continuously protected, strengthened and renewed through collective effort.

He concluded with a message of goodwill, wishing Nigerians a peaceful and reflective Democracy Day celebration.
