The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has updated its official records to reflect Professor Sadid Umar Abubakar Gombe as the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), following the implementation of a Supreme Court judgment affirming the autonomy of political parties in their internal affairs.

The adjustment, effected on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in Abuja, also saw the removal of the name of the party’s former National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, alongside other previously listed officials, effectively bringing closure to the leadership dispute that had lingered within the party.

The action by the commission is a direct consequence of the Supreme Court ruling which held that neither the courts nor INEC possess the authority to interfere in the internal administration, discipline, or leadership choices of political parties, except as provided by law.

In compliance with the judgment, INEC’s updated register now recognises the leadership structure submitted by the SDP under Prof. Gombe, marking a significant turning point in the party’s internal reconciliation process.

The Social Democratic Party has since welcomed the development, describing it as a restoration of order and a fresh opportunity to consolidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Party officials said the resolution effectively ends months of internal tension that had threatened cohesion within its national leadership, insisting that the ruling strengthens democratic practice and party independence.

National Publicity Secretary of the SDP, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, said the party is satisfied with the outcome, stressing that it reaffirms constitutional governance and internal democracy.

“We welcome this development as a victory for due process and the rule of law. The SDP remains committed to constitutional governance and to policies rooted in Chapter 2 of the Constitution and our party manifesto,” he said.

With the leadership dispute now legally settled, attention within the party has shifted to rebuilding internal unity and strengthening structures ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Party sources said the new National Working Committee under Prof. Gombe is expected to embark on reconciliation efforts across state chapters while repositioning the party for a stronger national presence.

The party’s presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, is also being projected as a central figure in the SDP’s renewed political strategy, with emphasis on economic reform, security, and governance accountability as key campaign pillars.

According to party stakeholders, the resolution of the leadership crisis is expected to allow the SDP to present a more unified front as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

Political observers note that the Supreme Court’s stance may have broader implications for party autonomy in Nigeria’s democratic system, reinforcing the limits of external intervention in internal party matters.
