The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reaffirmed its commitment to international peacekeeping efforts as it joined the global community in commemorating the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

In a message marking the occasion on Wednesday, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, paid tribute to peacekeepers across the world for their courage, professionalism and dedication to the promotion of global peace and security.

The police chief also honoured the memory of peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving under the United Nations flag, describing their sacrifices as a lasting inspiration in the pursuit of a safer and more peaceful world.

Disu noted that Nigeria has maintained a strong record of participation in international peace support operations, with officers of the Nigeria Police Force serving in several United Nations, African Union and regional peacekeeping missions over the years.

According to him, Nigerian police personnel have consistently distinguished themselves through professionalism, expertise and commitment while operating in conflict-affected communities across the globe.

He said the contributions of Nigerian peacekeepers have further strengthened the country’s reputation as a responsible stakeholder in the promotion of international peace and security.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s commemoration, “Invest in Peace,” the Inspector-General stressed the importance of sustained investment in peacebuilding initiatives, institutional capacity development, technology and international cooperation.

He observed that emerging security threats such as terrorism, transnational organised crime, cyber-enabled offences, communal conflicts and violent extremism demand innovative and collaborative approaches to security management.

“The contemporary security environment requires continuous investment in peacebuilding, strong institutions, technology and international partnerships capable of addressing evolving threats,” he said.

The IGP further noted the need to provide peacekeepers with adequate training, skills, technology and operational resources to enable them respond effectively to emerging security challenges.

He also acknowledged the growing contributions of female peacekeepers in international operations and called for greater opportunities for women to assume leadership roles in peace missions.

While appreciating the sacrifices made by peacekeepers and their families, Disu reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening its peacekeeping capacity and supporting initiatives aimed at promoting global peace, security and stability.

He added that the Force would continue to prioritise professionalism, capacity building and strategic partnerships as part of efforts to enhance its contribution to international peacekeeping operations and sustainable peace worldwide.

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed annually to recognise the service and sacrifices of military, police and civilian personnel deployed in peace operations across the world.
