The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has commended the Nigerian Army for its continued support in ensuring the safety of corps members and protecting NYSC formations across the country.

Nafiu gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army in Jos, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, where he acknowledged the military’s contribution to the smooth operation of the scheme.

The NYSC boss said the success of the programme depends largely on a secure environment, stressing that corps members can only effectively contribute to national development when their safety is guaranteed.

He particularly praised the 3 Division for maintaining stability within its area of responsibility, noting that security challenges had never forced the scheme to suspend or cancel an orientation course in any state under the division’s jurisdiction.

According to him, the Army’s efforts have enabled thousands of young graduates participating in the national service programme to carry out their assignments without disruption.

Nafiu disclosed that more than 7,000 corps members are currently serving in Plateau State, contributing to the state’s socio-economic development through their various places of primary assignment.

The Director-General also highlighted the broader impact of the NYSC scheme since its establishment, saying it has remained a vital tool for promoting national unity, integration and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

He noted that the programme has fostered inter-ethnic relationships, encouraged cultural exchange and created opportunities for youth empowerment and employment.

Nafiu further pointed to the scheme’s contributions to critical sectors such as education and healthcare through the deployment of corps doctors, nurses and other health professionals to hospitals, as well as teachers to public schools across the country.

Seeking continued collaboration with the military, he said, “We seek your continued support in providing an enabling environment for us to effectively discharge our mandate.”

The NYSC boss added that the scheme was implementing reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency and enhancing service delivery nationwide.

Responding, the GOC 3 Division, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, commended Nafiu for the achievements recorded since assuming office as Director-General of the NYSC.

He described the DG as a worthy ambassador of the Nigerian Army and applauded the efforts of the NYSC Plateau State Coordinator, members of staff and corps members for their dedication to duty.

Oyinlola said the positive impact of the scheme remained evident across the country and urged the management to sustain its efforts.

“Whether we like it or not, testimonies abound about the positive impact of the NYSC. Keep up the good work, and I am confident you will continue to take the Scheme to greater heights,” he said.

The GOC also reaffirmed the commitment of the 3 Division to safeguarding corps members serving within its operational area, assuring the NYSC of continued military support in maintaining a secure environment for the scheme.
