EFCC Defends Osun Account Freeze Amid Election Concerns

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has defended its decision to freeze the Osun State Government’s bank accounts, insisting that the action was taken to protect public funds under investigation and was not influenced by the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The anti-graft agency’s explanation came hours after news of the account freeze filtered into the public, triggering widespread political and legal reactions.

While the Osun State Government and opposition parties described the move as politically motivated and capable of disrupting governance ahead of the August 15 governorship election, the EFCC maintained that its action was based solely on ongoing criminal investigations.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the commission said it had been investigating the Osun State Government since March 2026 over the alleged fraudulent handling of N11 billion from the Ecology Fund, Intervention Fund and Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations.

It disclosed that several officials of the state government, including the Accountant-General, had already been questioned as part of the investigation.

According to the EFCC, the investigation itself did not initially warrant a restriction on the state’s accounts, but investigators detected what it described as suspicious movements of public funds beginning on August 2.

The commission alleged that huge sums were transferred from government accounts into several corporate accounts, prompting it to issue a Post No Debit order to halt further transactions.

“The ongoing investigations of the state government would not have warranted any placement of a Post No Debit order on its account but for the precipitate and unwarranted movement of funds from the accounts to different suspicious accounts since August 2, 2026,” the commission said.

It added that investigators observed “huge transfers of funds into different corporate entities” and moved swiftly to stop what it described as a suspicious trend.

The development has generated intense public debate, with many critics questioning the timing of the action, coming barely days before the August 15 governorship election in which Governor Ademola Adeleke is seeking re-election.

The Osun Government has accused the EFCC of acting without a court order, while opposition parties and legal practitioners have also raised concerns, with some describing the action as politically motivated and capable of influencing the electoral environment.

Responding to the criticism, the EFCC insisted that it could not suspend its statutory responsibilities because of an election.

“The Commission cannot watch idly while a state government’s account is being pillaged. While the Commission is fully aware of the impending governorship election in Osun State, it has a responsibility to act in defence of the sanctity of the funds of the state. It will be uncharitable for the Commission to allow an excuse of an upcoming election to fold its arms to perform its legally assigned functions,” it said.

The anti-graft agency stressed that its preventive mandate was aimed at safeguarding public funds and ensuring accountability in the management of government resources.

It also disclosed that Osun was not the only state under scrutiny, noting that several other state governments were currently on its investigative radar as part of efforts to promote transparency and probity in public finance.

“Many of these states are on the investigative radar of the Commission to ensure accountability and probity,” the statement added.

The EFCC further rejected allegations of political bias, insisting that it remained non-partisan in carrying out its mandate.

According to the commission, the decision to freeze the accounts was purely a preventive measure to stop the alleged diversion of public funds pending the conclusion of investigations.

It urged Nigerians to disregard what it described as false narratives aimed at discrediting its operations, maintaining that protecting public resources remained paramount.
