The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has received the ChangeMaker Climate Leadership Award at the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards.
The award ceremony took place on November 3, 2026, at Habour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, as part of activities marking the centenary of The Daily Times of Nigeria.
The organisers recognised Anosike for his contributions to meteorological development, institutional reforms and the use of weather and climate information to support national development.
They also acknowledged his efforts to transform NiMet into a more technology-driven and service-oriented agency. These reforms have strengthened its capacity to provide weather intelligence that supports economic activities and protects lives.
Since President Bola Tinubu appointed him in December 2023, Anosike has pursued reforms aimed at improving the agency’s scientific capabilities and modernising its operations.
His administration has also focused on making weather and climate information more useful to critical sectors of the economy, particularly aviation, agriculture, disaster management and climate adaptation.
The agency’s growing role in these areas reflects the importance of reliable meteorological information to national planning. Timely forecasts and early warnings help reduce disaster risks, protect livelihoods and guide investment decisions.
Anosike’s leadership has also expanded NiMet’s contribution to international discussions on climate resilience, early warning systems and sustainable development.
The ChangeMaker Climate Leadership Award, presented during the centenary celebration of The Daily Times, highlights the importance of effective meteorological institutions in addressing climate variability and its effects.
It also recognises the role of scientific information in strengthening national preparedness and supporting evidence-based decisions across different sectors.
For NiMet, the recognition represents further encouragement to improve the delivery of accurate and timely weather and climate information.
Under Anosike, the agency continues to expand its services beyond conventional weather forecasting to provide actionable intelligence for public safety, economic productivity and sustainable development.
