Gusau, Eight NFF Board Members Resign Amid Football Crisis

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, and at least eight members of the federation’s 13-member executive committee have reportedly resigned amid mounting pressure over the state of Nigerian football.

Brila FM first reported the development, while TVC News said it independently confirmed Gusau’s resignation through a senior member of the Supporters Club close to the NFF president.

The reported resignations come after a difficult run for Nigeria’s national teams, with the Super Eagles missing out on consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments and the Super Falcons suffering a historic setback in their bid to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The Falcons were eliminated by Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations before losing to South Africa in the subsequent playoff route. The outcome ended Nigeria’s record of appearing at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.

The setbacks had intensified criticism of the NFF leadership, with stakeholders calling for major reforms in the administration of the sport and questioning the federation’s handling of national teams.

The NFF has also faced scrutiny over its management of funds allocated to the national teams, while earlier reports indicated that security agencies were examining allegations involving some federation officials. The agencies had not publicly confirmed the reported investigations at the time.

The latest development follows the work of a fact-finding committee constituted by the NFF to examine Nigeria’s recent failures on the international stage. The committee reportedly raised concerns over issues including camp management, technical decisions and wider administrative shortcomings.

The reported mass resignation could further alter the leadership structure of the federation and potentially affect preparations for the NFF executive committee election scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

However, details surrounding the resignations, including the identities of all the officials said to have stepped down and the formal process for communicating the decision, were not immediately clear.

The development is expected to trigger fresh discussions among football stakeholders over the future direction of the country’s football administration.
