JAMB, WAEC Scrap Multiple O’Level Verification Fees, Set N4,000 One-Off Charge

Candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions will no longer be required to pay repeatedly for the verification of their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, following a new arrangement between the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Under the arrangement, candidates will pay a one-off fee of N4,000 to verify their WAEC or other O’Level results through the JAMB Verification Service platform.

Once the verification is completed, the outcome will be made available to the tertiary institution where the candidate is seeking admission, eliminating the need for the same result to be verified afresh by individual institutions.

The two bodies announced the development in a joint statement issued on Tuesday, saying the initiative was designed to reduce the financial burden and administrative difficulties faced by admission seekers.

They stressed that the N4,000 fee must be paid only through the designated JAMB Verification Service platform and not to any tertiary institution or individual.

The new arrangement also directs institutions to rely on the verified results transmitted by JAMB when conducting admission screening, processing applications and carrying out related administrative procedures.

Consequently, tertiary institutions are not expected to charge candidates additional fees to verify the same WAEC result already processed through the JAMB platform.

The decision followed consultations and meetings between JAMB and WAEC over ways of streamlining O’Level result verification and removing unnecessary duplication in the admission process.

WAEC has authorised JAMB to transmit verification outcomes to relevant tertiary institutions for admission-related purposes, according to the statement.

“This arrangement is designed to ensure that candidates who have successfully verified their WASSCE O’ Level result through the Verification Service platform will not be required to repeat the same verification exercise,” the two organisations said.

The bodies said the system would also make the process more convenient, as candidates could initiate and complete verification from their homes or any location with internet access.

The arrangement is expected to reduce the number of times candidates have to visit tertiary institutions or JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres simply to authenticate their academic records.

JAMB and WAEC advised candidates to complete their O’Level verification once through the approved platform and retain the outcome for use by the institution where they are seeking admission.

The organisations said the collaboration was aimed at putting candidates at the centre of the admission process by cutting avoidable expenses, reducing administrative stress and making the verification of academic credentials more efficient.

They also maintained that the new system would preserve the integrity and security of candidates’ academic records while improving coordination between the admission and examination bodies.
