ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Across Lagos State Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has declared an indefinite strike across the three universities owned by the Lagos State Government.

The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

The union announced the action on Tuesday after the Lagos State Government failed to resolve its demands within a 14-day ultimatum.

ASUU had issued the ultimatum on August 31 and gave the government until September 13 to act.

However, the union said the deadline passed without meaningful talks or a concrete plan to address the outstanding issues.

It said its final warning on September 10 had made clear that it could no longer accept continued silence from the government.

Consequently, the ASUU Joint Campus Group covering the three universities ordered members to begin a total and indefinite strike immediately.

The union’s major demand centres on the implementation of the December 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government.

ASUU wants Lagos State to domesticate and implement the relevant provisions of the agreement in all its state-owned universities.

Among the key provisions are the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, CATA, and welfare protections for serving and retired academic staff.

The union said it had exercised restraint for months while seeking dialogue with the state government.

It accused the government of failing to act despite similar agreements being implemented by some neighbouring states.

ASUU said the strike could affect the academic calendar, but maintained that it had no alternative after what it described as eight months of frustration.

The union appealed to students to remain calm and law-abiding throughout the dispute.

It said the struggle was aimed at protecting the quality and future of university education.

According to the union, poorly motivated lecturers cannot deliver the standard of education students deserve.

ASUU also acknowledged the concerns of parents and guardians over possible delays in their children’s academic programmes.

The union, however, maintained that its action was necessary to secure lasting solutions to the problems affecting lecturers.

It also urged the management of the three universities to understand that the strike was not targeted at them.

Instead, the union said the action would help create conditions for motivated staff and better administration of the institutions.

ASUU commended the managements of LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH for their efforts to domesticate the agreement.

The union also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, alumni groups and civil society organisations to support its demands.

It described the situation as a rescue effort for education in Lagos State and urged stakeholders to speak up.

The union said its national leadership fully backed the strike and had supported every stage of the process.

According to ASUU, its national body backed the letters sent to university authorities, governing councils and the Visitor before the ultimatum was issued.

The union also urged the Lagos State Government to follow the example of other governors who had resolved similar disputes in their universities.

ASUU said the strike would continue until the government enters meaningful negotiations and reaches a satisfactory agreement.

It further demanded that Lagos State sign, domesticate and fully implement the applicable provisions of the 2025 agreement.

The union, however, left the door open for dialogue and pledged to restore academic activities once the outstanding issues receive satisfactory attention.
