Nigeria Embassy in Qatar Cuts Passport Processing to Two Weeks

The Nigerian Embassy in Qatar has cut passport processing time to about two weeks, giving Nigerians in the Gulf country faster access to renewed and newly issued travel documents.

The improvement followed a 10-day passport intervention exercise held in Doha from August 11 to 21, 2026.

During the exercise, embassy officials processed applications from 751 Nigerian nationals. The figure included 441 applications for five-year passports and 310 requests for 10-year passports.

The mission began distributing the completed passports on September 18. That was less than a month after applicants completed their biometric capture.

The faster turnaround means applicants can now receive their travel documents well ahead of the longer waiting periods often associated with diplomatic passport processing.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, described the development as a major milestone for the mission’s consular services.

“The fact that passports are now being completed and returned within about two weeks of capture demonstrates our commitment to improving service delivery and responding to the needs of our community,” Yakubu said.

He said the mission understands the importance of valid passports to Nigerians living abroad.

According to him, the documents remain essential for international travel, employment and maintaining valid residency status.

The ambassador said the embassy would continue to focus on improving consular services as the Nigerian community in Qatar grows.

The intervention also comes amid rising demand for consular assistance among Nigerians living in the Gulf state.

By processing a large number of applications within a short period, the mission has sought to reduce delays and make passport services more responsive to applicants’ needs.

The latest exercise covers both five-year and 10-year passport applications, giving eligible Nigerians different options based on their requirements.

The embassy’s faster delivery of the documents also highlights the importance of efficient biometric capture, processing and distribution in reducing the time applicants spend waiting for passports.
