

The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) members who were abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road.
The victims were rescued at about 4:28 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Amakohia Ubi Village after spending six days in captivity.
The police said the rescue followed sustained and coordinated search-and-rescue operations by the command and sister security agencies.
According to the command, the rescued prospective corps members were immediately taken for medical examination and necessary treatment following their recovery.
The 20 victims were abducted on October 1, 2026, while travelling along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State, prompting security agencies to intensify efforts to locate them and secure their release.
The operation involved sustained searches around suspected hideouts and other locations considered relevant to the rescue effort.
The police said the successful operation was part of its continued efforts to protect residents and respond swiftly to security threats across the state.
While confirming the release of the victims, the command said security agencies had not ended their operations, as efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the abduction.
The police also expressed appreciation to members of the public for their support and cooperation during the operation, stressing the importance of timely information in tackling criminal activities.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that those who threaten the safety of residents are brought to justice.
