The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, has welcomed the listing of the Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences (AFCOM-HS) on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal for the 2026/2027 academic session, ahead of the admission of 100 pioneer cadets.
The college, located within the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, is designed to train military medical personnel and strengthen healthcare delivery within the Armed Forces.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, said the development marked a milestone in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for education, healthcare and national security.
Alausa said the institution would provide specialised training for doctors, nurses and other health professionals to address critical manpower needs in military healthcare.
The college has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to offer Medicine and Surgery, leading to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, as well as Nursing Science, leading to the Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc.).
The minister said the institution would combine medical education with military officer development, equipping cadets with clinical competence, professional ethics and leadership skills.
According to him, the training would prepare graduates to support the health needs of Armed Forces personnel and contribute to strengthening national health security.
AFCOM-HS is designed to train military cadets in medicine, nursing and related medical disciplines from the outset. Its establishment is part of the Federal Government’s Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
Alausa commended the Minister of Defence, Lt-Gen Chris Musa, and the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle, for their contributions to the establishment of the institution.
He also acknowledged the Armed Forces leadership, the Technical Working Group chaired by Brig-Gen Dr Idris Babatunde Solebo, JAMB, the NUC and relevant professional regulatory authorities for their roles in advancing the project.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to academic oversight, quality assurance and regulatory collaboration to ensure the college meets the required standards.
Prospective applicants have been advised to consult official AFCOM-HS and JAMB channels for information on eligibility, application procedures, military selection requirements and admission dates.
