Mexico has approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country, ending months of uncertainty over his diplomatic posting.

Omokri announced the approval on Tuesday through his official Facebook page. He said the Mexican government had formally communicated its acceptance to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, delivered the diplomatic approval, known as agrément, to the ministry’s Director of Protocol, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.

“Today in Abuja, the Mexican diplomat delivered the agrément accepting him to serve as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico,” Omokri wrote.

The approval also covers his concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. He will therefore represent Nigeria in four Central American countries.

President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position on November 29, 2025, alongside 31 other nominees. The list included former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.

The Senate confirmed the nominees in December 2025. Tinubu subsequently approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners on March 6, 2026, assigning Omokri to Mexico City.

The President also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to begin their induction programme. However, questions over Mexico’s acceptance of Omokri’s appointment continued to attract public attention.

In March, reports emerged that a Nigerian diaspora group had petitioned Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The group urged her government to reject Omokri’s nomination over his political comments and past positions on Nigerian leaders.

Mexico did not publicly confirm any rejection at the time. Omokri also denied the speculation during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June.

“Mexico has not rejected me. Not at all,” he said.

He attributed the delay to diplomatic procedures and Mexico’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the country is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.

Omokri also argued that the delay was not unique to his posting, noting that other Nigerian ambassador-designates had yet to resume duties in their host countries.

The uncertainty persisted into August, when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs identified Mexico and Japan among the countries yet to communicate formal acceptance of two outstanding ambassadorial appointments.

The ministry’s then spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said Nigeria was engaging the two countries and expressed confidence that they would communicate their decisions in due course.

Tuesday’s announcement now confirms Mexico’s acceptance of Omokri’s appointment, although his formal assumption of duty remains unclear.

Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan. He later became widely known for his political commentary and public interventions on national issues.

Agrément refers to the formal consent a country grants before another nation appoints an ambassador to serve there. The approval forms a key stage in the diplomatic process and must precede the envoy’s formal assumption of duty.

Omokri did not disclose when he would travel to Mexico or present his credentials to the Mexican president.
