Anambra: Police, kidnappers engage In firefight.
Members of the Anambra State Police Command and escaping kidnappers exchanged gunfire during the rescue operation of a kidnapped individual at Umuota Village, Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area of the region.
The individual, known as Abuchi, hailing from Orumba South LGA of Anambra State, was reportedly abducted on Saturday evening and was subsequently freed following the alertness of local inhabitants, who promptly notified the authorities.
The spokesperson for the state police, Tochukwu Ikenga, in a press release on Sunday, stated that the police officers, during their anti-crime patrol in Obosi around 7.30pm on Saturday, were halted by locals in the vicinity, who alerted them about the abduction incident.
Ikenga reported that during the incident, a police operative stepped in and took action. As a result, one of the kidnappers was apprehended, while the remaining individuals escaped, possibly with injuries caused by gunshots.
The police chief stated that the apprehended kidnapper provided information about the escaping individuals and passed away while being transported to the medical facility for medical care.
He stated, “One of the hoodlums was shot and arrested while others escaped, some with bullet wounds. One double-barrelled pistol, and two live and one expended cartridge were recovered from the gang.
“The arrested suspect gave his name as Nwasu Ikenna from Obosi. He identified those that escaped as Ebuka, aka Big; Chinedu Emmanuel, and Chukwu Ojoto.
“The hoodlum, who identified Ebuka as the leader of the gang, gave up the ghost on the way to hospital for treatment.”
