Coup: US President Biden praises Tinubu for “resolute leadership”
US President, Joe Biden has praised Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu for his “resolute leadership” in managing the turmoil caused by the coup in Niger Republic.
It was reported that Biden praised Tinubu’s reaction to the coup, which witnessed the Niger military overthrowing the democratically-elected administration of Mohamed Bazoum.
Biden also recognized the measures implemented by the Tinubu government to revamp Nigeria’s economy, stating that the country’s inclusion in the G20 Summit was an “acknowledgment of Nigeria’s significant worldwide position as Africa’s biggest democracy and economy.”
Tinubu currently serves as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Following the coup, he swiftly demanded the prompt reinstatement of democracy in the nation and has implemented punitive measures against the military regime.
The overthrow in Niger Republic is the most recent in a sequence of military seizures in West Africa. In recent times, there have been uprisings in Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso, and the most recent one in Gabon.
