APC, NNPP planned protests flop in Kano

The planned protests by members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano failed to hold on Saturday as none of the parties’ faithful showed up.

The two parties had mobilised their supporters to stage protests to express their views on the recent ruling of the Appeal Court in Abuja which declared a controversial judgment on the governorship election in the state.

However, it was observed that the parties’ supporters failed to turn up for the protest match, as they stayed indoors, obviously heeding to the warning of the State Police Command that it would deal ruthlessly with persons who staged a protest on the scheduled date.

The parties’ supporters must have also been deterred by the heavy presence of security operatives which included Soldiers, Police and Civil Defence that took positions in major locations in the state capital, looking battle ready.

The planned protest seemed further neutralized by the state’s monthly sanitation exercise which takes place every last Saturday of the month, and which keeps residents of the state indoors from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

It was further observed that most residents of the commercial city trooped out of their houses immediately after the sanitation exercise and went about their normal activities without any sign of protests from them.

The planned protest had generated so much tension in the city that many of the residents embarked on prayers both individually and in groups, asking God not to allow the political situation in the state to get out of hand.
