Former Speaker, Ghali Na’abba Dies at 65
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives in Nigeria, Alhaji Ghali Na’abba, has passed away at 65. His death occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at a hospital within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Known as a maverick politician, Na’abba represented the Kano Municipal Federal Constituency of Kano State in the House of Representatives beginning in 1999. His journey to the position of Speaker was backed by his fellow House members from Kano and the North West geopolitical zone.
A Life Dedicated to Public Service
Na’abba was born on September 27, 1958, into the family of Alhaji Umar Na’Abba in Tudun Wada, Kano City. His father, a businessman and an Islamic scholar, instilled in him the virtues of hard work, entrepreneurship, strong religious beliefs, prudence, and modesty. These values carried Na’abba throughout his life and political career.
He graduated with a degree in Political Science from the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. In 1999, he was elected to the House of Representatives and was appointed Speaker a few months after the House’s inauguration. His tenure as Speaker lasted from 1999 to 2003.
A Shift in Political Allegiance
Prior to his death, Na’abba was known to have switched parties from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to the main opposition, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). This move was seen as a significant political event, further solidifying his reputation as a maverick.
Remembering a Leader
Ghali Na’abba is survived by his wife, 10 children, and three grandchildren. Arrangements are being made to transport his remains to Kano for burial. His death is a significant event, reflecting the loss of a prominent leader in Nigerian politics. Na’abba’s legacy will undoubtedly continue to shape the political landscape of Nigeria for the foreseeable future.
