NEMA assures ongoing rescue as Ibadan explosion left 20 houses damaged

The Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo State, witnessed a devastating explosion on Tuesday night, impacting over 20 houses, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

In a statement released on Wednesday, NEMA reported that a suspected Improvised Explosive Device caused the explosion, and as of now, there is no confirmed information about casualties.

NEMA assured residents that security has been increased in the area, stating, “The situation has been brought under control while arrangements are going on to ensure smooth operation.”

Governor Seyi Makinde, after visiting the scene, stated that preliminary investigations suggest illegal miners storing explosive devices were responsible for the incident.

He emphasized that those found guilty would face consequences and assured that the government would cover the medical bills of the victims.

While the Oyo State Police Command confirmed the explosion, the exact number of casualties remains unknown.

National Periscope also learned that security personnel have been deployed to maintain order.

On its official X handle, the state government urged residents to avoid the incident scene to facilitate emergency and rescue operations, stating that “This will enable emergency and rescue efforts to continue at the site without interference. Search and rescue efforts using earth-moving equipment continued throughout the night and remain ongoing. We will keep providing updates about the situation.”
