Five reasons for Super Eagles to top their 2023 AFCON group

After kicking off their 2023 AFCON campaign with a gritty 1-1 draw with the Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea, early signs looked pretty uncertain for a relatively youthful Nigeria squad finding its feet not until that narrow 1-0 win against host nation, Ivory Coast in the second group game.

While qualification from Group A remains likely, manager Jose Peseiro will be drilling home the importance of securing top spot for both practical and psychological factors.

Furthermore, whilst simply qualifying would satisfy minimum expectations, Peseiro must instill in his players, the wider benefits of topping Group A.

Having already cleared their trickiest hurdle, the Super Eagles have no excuse not to soar higher in pursuit of AFCON glory.

Allnigeriasoccer.com takes a look at 5 key reasons the Super Eagles must prioritize finishing group leaders:

1. Avoid knockout stage landmines

Assuming they negotiate the group, the Super Eagles may likely face a Round of 16 clash against a tougher opponent.

However, leading Group A would set up a matchup versus a less tougher opponent bar. The fact that there are no underdogs at this particular AFCON, topping the group keeps the Super Eagles clear of landmines.

2. Build momentum

By already toppling one of their toughest opponents in Ivory Coast, confidence should be sky high.

Registering their second consecutive win rides  that momentum, while dropping points risks stagnation.

3. Reinforce strong mentality

This relatively young side must foster a winning culture under the spotlight. Securing maximum group points instills belief and an expectation to handle pressure cookers like knockout ties.

4. Restoring supporters’ trust

The three-time African champions in recent outings have given fans and supporters reasons to question the pedigree of the players as well as the philosophy of the team’s gaffer.

Finishing as group winners will certainly go a long way in earning the trust of their adoring fans and supporters.

5. Dangle carrot in front of fringe players

Peseiro can offer fringe squad members incentives to perform by handing them minutes in the final group game if qualification is assured. Keeping them happy and sharp could pay dividends.
