Policy somersault: A distraction from Nigeria’s pressing issues

Today, May 29, 2024, marks the first anniversary of the inauguration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It is a day that should be marked with reflection on the progress made so far in terms of improved governance, economic growth, and enhanced security. Instead, we are greeted with the news of a reversal to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”.

The recent decision to revert to Nigeria’s old national anthem has left many wondering if this is the priority the country needs at this critical juncture. With the economy in shambles, insecurity at an all-time high, and food prices skyrocketing, one cannot help but question the timing and relevance of this policy somersault.

While the nostalgic value of the old anthem may appeal to some, it is hard to see how this change will alleviate the suffering of the common man. The government and legislature should be focused on addressing the pressing issues that affect the daily lives of Nigerians, not indulging in symbolic gestures that lack tangible impact.

The harsh economy, characterized by rising unemployment, inflation, and poverty, demands concrete solutions, not sentimental nostalgia. The insecurity that has claimed countless lives and displaced many requires decisive action, not a mere change of anthem. The rising cost of food items, which has made it difficult for many to afford basic necessities, needs to be addressed through practical policies, not a symbolic reversal.

On this anniversary of President Tinubu’s inauguration, we should be counting our blessings based on improved governance, economic growth, and enhanced security. Instead, we are faced with a policy somersault that raises questions about the priorities of our leaders. Are they more concerned with appeasing a nostalgic few or genuinely working to improve the lives of all Nigerians? The country needs a clear direction, effective leadership, and tangible solutions to its numerous challenges, not a distraction from the real issues.
