Nigeria commiserates with Kingdom of Spain following devastating floods

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

Following the catastrophic flash floods that swept through eastern Spain on October 29, the Federal Republic of Nigeria has expressed its deep condolences to the Spanish government and its citizens.

In a statement signed on Friday by the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with Spain during this tragic time.

According to earlier reports, the flooding was triggered by unprecedented rainfall and has caused widespread destruction across the eastern regions of Spain, particularly in Valencia and its surrounding provinces.

Reacting to the development, Amb. Abu-Obe said; “The Federal Republic of Nigeria is dismayed at the news of devastating flash floods that struck eastern Spain, on Tuesday, 29th October, 2024, claiming 158 lives and several others missing.

“Nigeria stands with Spain at this tragic moment and therefore conveys its deepest condolences to the people of the Kingdom of Spain, while praying for the families of the victims.”

Meanwhile, the council for Valencia – one of the worst affected areas of the flooding – said on X, Friday that its services “continue to work intensively”  to support recovery efforts.

It says this involves “cleaning tasks, clearing debris, removing bulky objects and distributing food and drinking water.”
