Nigeria and Cyprus have expressed readiness to strengthen bilateral relations following the presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Israel and Cyprus, Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.

Ufochukwu presented her credentials on Friday at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, formally commencing her duties as Nigeria’s principal diplomatic representative to the Mediterranean island nation.

The ambassador conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s fraternal greetings to Christodoulides and pledged to strengthen relations between both countries during her tenure.

The ceremony marked an important step in Nigeria-Cyprus relations, authorising Ufochukwu to represent Nigeria and serve as an official channel of communication between Abuja and Nicosia.

Welcoming the Nigerian envoy, Christodoulides reaffirmed his country’s longstanding friendship with Nigeria, citing shared historical experiences, common principles and enduring ties between their peoples.

He also acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic importance in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly its contributions to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.

The Cypriot president expressed his government’s willingness to work closely with Nigeria to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

These include trade, investment, education, economic relations and political dialogue, alongside efforts to address shared challenges through bilateral and multilateral engagements.

The development signals an opportunity for both countries to broaden their partnership beyond traditional diplomatic relations and explore practical areas of cooperation.

For Nigeria, Ufochukwu’s accreditation offers a platform to advance its economic and diplomatic interests in Cyprus and the wider Mediterranean region, particularly in trade, education and diaspora welfare.

Closer engagement could also create opportunities for Nigerian businesses, students and professionals while encouraging Cypriot investors to explore opportunities in Nigeria.

Senior Cypriot government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission attended the ceremony.

Ufochukwu is expected to engage Cypriot government officials, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community as she begins efforts to translate the renewed diplomatic goodwill into tangible benefits for both countries.

Her presentation of credentials marks the formal beginning of a new phase in Nigeria-Cyprus relations, with both sides signalling interest in stronger cooperation built on mutual respect and shared interests.
