FG refutes rumored attacks on Nigerians in Libya following CAF verdict

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has firmly refuted circulating rumors regarding alleged attacks on Nigerians residing in Libya, following a recent verdict by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

In a statement issued by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, it was emphasized that “Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment by Libyan authorities.”

This assertion counters reports published in the Punch newspaper on November 3, 2024, which suggested that there were safety concerns for Nigerians in the North African nation.

The controversy stems from a recent CAF ruling that found the Libyan Football Association at fault for their ill-treatment of the Nigerian football team and officials during a Nations Cup qualifying match ahead of 2025.

In response to the verdict, some speculated that there could be repercussions for the Nigerian community in Libya.

Amb. Abu-Obe sought to reassure Nigerians, stating, “The wellbeing of Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world is a top priority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and will continue to strive to safeguard it at all times.”
