Ganduje Denounces Obi’s Death Threat Allegation as ‘Mischief’, ‘Falsehood’

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has strongly criticized claims made by Mr. Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party, alleging threats to his life as “unfortunate and misleading.”

In a statement personally signed by Dr. Ganduje on Wednesday, he termed Obi’s assertions as “sheer mischief and outright falsehood,” which, while deserving to be ignored, required refutation due to their baseless nature.

Ganduje expressed his dismay over the allegations circulated on Obi’s verified social media account, calling it a “malicious lie aimed at seeking attention and playing the victim for emotional blackmail.”

The APC National Chairman clarified that Obi’s accusations were rooted in a misrepresentation of comments made by Mr. Felix Morka, the APC National Publicity Secretary, during an interview on Arise TV’s ThisDay Live on January 4, 2025. He categorically stated that at no point did Morka threaten Obi or his family.

“By falsely claiming that Morka threatened his life, Mr. Obi has libeled Morka in the extreme and incited his online supporters to issue death threats against Morka and his family,” Ganduje asserted.

He emphasized the accountability that comes with being a public figure, stating that Obi has a duty to share accurate information, noting that the dissemination of falsehood undermines public trust.

“Morka was simply discharging his duties as National Publicity Secretary of the APC, holding opposition actors accountable for their statements, as is expected in a democratic setting,” Ganduje remarked.

He elaborated that Morka’s comments were in response to inquiries regarding “prophets of doom” and “voodoo economics,” clarifying, “Nothing in his statement constituted or suggested a threat to Obi or anyone else.”

Highlighting the importance of free speech protected under Nigeria’s Constitution, Ganduje called on Obi to refrain from spreading misinformation and to accept criticism as part of the democratic process.

“Does Mr. Obi expect the APC to fold its arms and allow the opposition to propagate falsehoods without any response?” Ganduje queried, reiterating the APC’s commitment to countering baseless allegations with facts regarding the Tinubu-led government.

Dr. Ganduje affirmed the party’s support for Morka and his efforts to defend the federal government while ensuring that the records are set straight against what he described as disinformation from desperate politicians.

He therefore reiterated the APC’s dedication to upholding democratic principles and holding opposition actors accountable when necessary.
