Nigeria Lauds Implementation of Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Deal in Gaza
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja
The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its strong support for the recent ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas, marking a hopeful turn in the ongoing conflict that has resulted in devastating losses for civilians in Gaza.
In an official statement issued on Monday, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Acting Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted the government’s sentiments, stating, “The agreement offers the prospect of an end to the appalling loss of civilian life and human tragedy witnessed across Gaza over the last 15 months, as well as relief to the families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and some of the Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons.”
As part of this ceasefire, Nigeria also commended the provision of much needed aid and relief materials that the peace deal facilitates, highlighting the humanitarian aspect of the agreement that aims to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict.
Reflecting on the broader implications of the ceasefire, the statement noted that
“the ceasefire agreement presents the people of the region with an opportunity for hope and compassion.”
Furthermore, Nigeria praised the mediating efforts of the Arabic Republic of Egypt, the State of Qatar, and the United States of America, acknowledging their “painstaking work during the negotiations that delivered the ceasefire agreement, and for which they will now act as international guarantors.”
The Nigerian government encourages all stakeholders involved to capitalize on this “new momentum” and work diligently towards the successful implementation of the subsequent phases of the agreement. In line with this, Nigeria reaffirmed its support for “a two-state solution as the blueprint for a just and lasting peace for Palestine, Israel and the entire region.”
