FG Confirms Death of Footballer Abubakar Lawal, Condoles with Family

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has confirmed the tragic death of 29-year-old footballer Abubakar Lawal, expressing deep sorrow and extending heartfelt condolences to his family and the wider Nigerian football community.

In an official statement signed by its Acting Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Ministry conveyed its grief, stating, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and the entire Nigerian football community during this difficult time.”

Lawal, a former Nigerian Under-20 international, was with Vipers Football Club in Uganda and was also completing his Business Administration degree at Cavendish University.

Lawal’s untimely death occurred early at Voicemall Shopping Arcade, where he reportedly fell from the third floor while visiting a Tanzanian friend who resided in one of the apartments associated with the mall.

National Periscope gathered that Local police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ebienfa further noted that the ministry of Foreign Affairs has been in contact with the Nigerian High Commission in Kampala, which is working closely with Ugandan authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.

The Ministry affirmed its commitment, stating, “We are committed to ensuring that a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted, including an autopsy to verify the cause of death.”

Additionally, the High Commission has been directed to provide necessary consular assistance to support Lawal’s family during this challenging time.

The Ministry emphasized Nigeria’s strong bilateral relations with Uganda, expressing confidence that “the Ugandan authorities will handle this matter with utmost seriousness and sensitivity.”

In light of the investigation, the Ministry has called for calm and patience, urging the public to “refrain from speculation that could hinder the process.

“May the soul of Mr. Abubakar Lawal, rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
