Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Fairer Global Order

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has articulated the nation’s commitment to fostering a fairer and more inclusive global order.

Tuggar said this on Wednesday, in his address at the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, he noted that the meeting provided a platform for discussions centered on “The Role of the Global South in Reinforcing Multilateralism.”

Tuggar expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Brazilian government for its warm hospitality and to the BRICS bloc for conferring upon Nigeria the status of Partner Country. This designation shows the bloc’s dedication to promoting inclusive multilateralism.

“In a world grappling with multifaceted challenges, ranging from climate change and technological disruption to global economic instability, Nigeria stands in solidarity with BRICS in advocating for reforms that accurately reflect contemporary realities and empower the Global South,” Tuggar stated.

The Minister emphasized that BRICS represents a viable and collaborative alternative to antiquated international frameworks. He cited initiatives such as the New Development Bank and ongoing discussions regarding a common payment system as indicative of a more balanced global order in the making.

Reiterating Nigeria’s alignment with the six priorities outlined in Brazil’s 2025 BRICS Chairmanship, Tuggar expressed Nigeria’s readiness to make meaningful contributions in critical areas, including peace and security, sustainable development, health cooperation, and the responsible governance of artificial intelligence.

Furthermore, he highlighted the significance of South-South Cooperation, asserting that the Global South should not merely be viewed as recipients of global policies but rather as proactive agents in crafting inclusive and sustainable solutions.

“Nigeria boasts a youthful population, a vibrant technology sector, and a strategic geographic position, making it a natural partner in advancing BRICS objectives and enhancing intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” he remarked.

Tuggar therefore called for urgent reforms of global governance institutions, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to better reflect the aspirations and realities of the 21st century.

“Nigeria is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a new era of global cooperation—one that is founded on principles of equity, solidarity, and mutual respect,” he affirmed.
