SDP Strengthens Leadership Ahead of 2027 Elections
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

In a move to strengthen its leadership in preparation for the 2027 general election, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has appointed some personalities to key positions within the party.
According to a statement signed on Thursday by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the decision was made yesterday, during a National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, which was presided over by its National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam.
Aiyenigba noted that the move aligns with Article 12.5 of the 2022 SDP Constitution and the mandate from the National Convention to fill vacant roles in the party’s national leadership.
He added that the decision had a “full complement of the members of the NWC, except one.”
The newly appointed leaders include Senator Ugochukwu Uba as Deputy National Chairman (South), Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar as Deputy National Chairman (North), and Hussani Ado Bello as National Financial Secretary.
Aiyenigba emphasized the significance of these appointments, stating, “These eminent Nigerian patriots bring a wealth of experience and expertise that will undoubtedly add value to our party and strengthen our resolve as we move forward.”
Senator Ugochukwu Uba, a scholar and seasoned politician from Anambra State, has a rich history of public service, having previously served as a member of the Centre for Democratic Studies and as a distinguished Senator representing Anambra South from 2003 to 2007.
He was a former Director-General and later Honourable Commissioner in Anambra State under the SDP administration of the late Governor Chukwuemeka Ezeife in 1992.
He served the nation as a member of the Centre for Democratic Studies (CDS), with the late Professor Omo Omoruyi as Director-General, under the IBB regime.
His contributions to the passage of the Cabotage Act and his academic credentials, including a PhD in Political Science, position him as a valuable asset to the SDP.
Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar, from Gombe State, is an acclaimed statistician with a strong academic background, holding a PhD in Political Economy and Development. He served as the SDP’s pioneer National Secretary and was the Governorship Candidate in Gombe State, highlighting his commitment to the party.
Hussani Ado Bello, a chartered accountant and retired civil servant from Kano State, brings extensive financial expertise to the role of National Financial Secretary. His previous leadership positions within the SDP and experience as a finance and tax consultant will be crucial in managing the party’s financial affairs effectively.
Aiyenigba noted that the newly appointed leaders will assume their roles immediately.
“Accordingly, Senator Ugochukwu Uba as Deputy National Chairman (South), Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar as Deputy National Chairman (North) and Mr. Hussani Ado Bello, as National Financial Secretary, have become members of the National Working Committee of our great party, the Social Democratic Party, with immediate effect, having been duly and validly appointed,” he announced.
