ICPC Urges Citizens to Demand Accountability, Combat Corruption in Local Government
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu, has urged citizens to take an active role in demanding accountability from their local government officials as a means to combat corruption.
Dr. Aliyu made the call in his remarks at a one-day engagement with members of the National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC) held in Abuja on Wednesday.
He emphasized the critical role local government plays in shaping the daily realities of citizens, highlighting that it is at this level where essential services are delivered and development initiatives should directly impact lives.
However, he pointed out the pervasive issue of corruption that often undermines these efforts.
“The diversion of funds meant for local projects, ghost worker syndicates, inflated contracts, and the misappropriation of internally generated revenues are but a few examples of the corrupt practices that undermine the very essence of local governance,” Dr. Aliyu explained.
He stressed that when corruption thrives at the local level, it directly impedes development and erodes public trust, stating, “It is a betrayal of the trust reposed in public officials by the very people they are meant to serve.”

The ICPC Chairman reiterated the commission’s commitment to not only prosecuting offenders but also to fostering a culture of integrity and proactive corruption prevention.
“This engagement is not merely a talk shop; it is a strategic convergence of minds, dedicated to forging practical solutions to a persistent challenge,” he said.
Dr. Aliyu commended the efforts of the NACC members, recognizing them as vital partners in the fight against corruption. “You are the eyes and ears of the people, and a vital partner in this ongoing fight. We at the ICPC value your insights, your experiences, and your commitment to this cause,” he remarked.
The ICPC Chairman also emphasized the importance of empowering citizens to demand accountability from their local government officials.
“Citizen participation in budget monitoring, project oversight, and reporting of corrupt practices is paramount,” he stated.
Dr. Aliyu highlighted the ICPC’s ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening governance at the local level, including partnerships with various organizations to develop and implement robust citizen engagement frameworks.
He concluded with a rallying call for sustained effort and active participation from all stakeholders.
“The fight against corruption is not a one-off event; it is an ongoing battle that requires sustained effort, unwavering commitment, and the active participation of all stakeholders.
“Let us use our collective expertise and experience to craft actionable recommendations that will truly make a difference in the lives of our people at the grassroots,” he urged.
