The Federal Government of Nigeria has addressed recent media speculation regarding a potential forward sale of crude oil by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), asserting that no final decision has been made on the matter.

This clarification comes amid ongoing economic reforms and discussions surrounding the management of Nigeria’s oil assets.

In a statement signed on Wednesday by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Finance, Mohammed Manga, the government acknowledged the prevalence of market speculation but emphasized that no final decision has been announced by the Government.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria is aware of recent media reports concerning a potential forward sale of crude oil involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd).

“While market speculation is not uncommon in the context of ongoing economic reforms and transactions, no final decision has been announced by the Government, and commentary suggesting the collapse of any such initiative is unfounded,” the statement partly read.

The forward sale of crude oil is a financial strategy that allows countries to secure future revenue by selling oil at predetermined prices.

This approach can provide immediate liquidity and stabilize government finances, especially in countries like Nigeria, where oil exports account for a significant portion of national revenue.

Despite the potential benefits, the government has reiterated its commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility in managing the country’s oil resources.

“The Government remains focused on deploying a range of innovative, transparent, and fiscally responsible financing strategies to optimize Nigeria’s oil assets, improve external liquidity, and strengthen macroeconomic stability,” Manga stated.
