Ukraine Deepens Ties with Nigeria Amid War, Condemns Russian Attacks

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with Nigeria in agriculture, information technology, and media cooperation, even as it condemned Russia’s latest missile and drone strikes that killed civilians and damaged the European Union Delegation premises in Kyiv.

Speaking virtually from Kyiv at a condolence ceremony in Abuja on Thursday, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Ivan Kholostenko, said the August 28 assault claimed at least 18 lives, including four children, the youngest not yet three years old.

“The killing of children is the gravest of crimes, one that requires firm international condemnation and accountability. Russia is a terrorist state, and we call on all countries and international organizations to formally recognize this status. We urge our partners across Africa to intensify pressure on Russia,” Kholostenko declared.

The event featured the opening of a Book of Condolences and a photo exhibition titled “Three Years of Resilience: Ukraine in Photograph”, alongside a diplomatic dialogue with members of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN).

Ukraine’s Consul, Oleksii Samillo, praised Nigeria as a “like-minded nation” and stressed that Ukraine remains determined to contribute to global partnerships despite the ongoing war.

“We are open like Nigeria. We are ready like Nigeria. We are developing our country, even as we continue to defend. Despite the challenges, we are still contributing, from agriculture to IT and industrial collaboration,” he said.

He also highlighted Ukraine’s long history and cultural identity: “Kiev was founded more than 1,500 years ago. We adopted Christianity in 988, and for over a thousand years, our culture has reflected this heritage. Ukraine’s independence declared in 1991 continues this historic tradition. We are free. We are Ukrainians.”

On his part, DICAN Chairman, Fredrick Idehai, pledged media support for Ukraine’s diplomatic presence in Nigeria, promising fair, balanced, and professional coverage. He also announced a joint training programme for Nigerian diplomatic correspondents with Ukrainian backing, aimed at countering disinformation and fostering closer ties.

“What we need is a proper, collaborative partnership,” Idehai said. “Together, we can amplify the truth, support development, and build lasting relations.”

The ceremony ended with a tribute to victims of the war and a guided exhibition tour showcasing Ukraine’s culture, landscapes, and wartime resilience.
