ICPC Disowns Alleged Anti-Corruption Event, Warns Against Donations

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has disowned an alleged anti-corruption programme for which members of the public are being asked to provide financial support, warning Nigerians to disregard the solicitation.

In a statement signed on Friday by the Commission’s spokesperson, Okor Odey, the ICPC said its attention was drawn to a circulating message soliciting funds for an event described as an “End of Year Whistle Blowing and Anti-Corruption Reports Submissions,” purportedly scheduled to hold between December 17 and 22 at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Commission said the message was allegedly signed by one Dandaura Takalis, PhD, who claimed to be representing a group identified as the Coalition of Civil Society and Human Rights Organisation.

According to the ICPC, it has no knowledge of the individual, the organisation or the programme being advertised, stressing that it was neither contacted nor consulted at any stage regarding the purported event.

“At no time was the Commission contacted, consulted, or involved in any manner regarding the said programme,” the statement said.

The ICPC, therefore, dissociated itself completely from the message, describing it as fraudulent and bearing clear indications of a scam.

It urged members of the public to exercise caution and refrain from making any financial contributions or offering any form of support in response to the solicitation.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparent and accountable anti-corruption efforts and advised Nigerians to verify any information relating to its activities through official communication channels.

It further warned that individuals or groups seeking to exploit the Commission’s name for financial gain would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
