Tinubu’s Türkiye Visit Boosts Trade, Security Ties — TDF
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Democratic Front (TDF) has described the grand state reception accorded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by the government and people of Türkiye as a strong signal of deepening bilateral relations, particularly in trade and security cooperation between both countries.
The group said the warm reception underscored growing confidence in Nigeria’s leadership and opened new windows of opportunity to rebalance trade relations that currently favour Türkiye.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, TDF noted that trade volume between Nigeria and Türkiye stands at about $2 billion, with the balance tilted against Nigeria.
“We have always been disturbed that the trade balance between both countries has not favoured Nigeria, despite the country’s advantages in economic potential and natural endowments,” the group stated.
However, it expressed optimism that President Tinubu’s “business-minded approach to statecraft” would stimulate mutually beneficial trade partnerships capable of boosting Nigeria’s exports to the Euro-Asian nation.
Linking the visit to broader global developments, TDF said the President’s engagement with Türkiye reflected a growing wave of international recognition Nigeria is receiving as a result of ongoing economic reforms.
“In our opinion, the President’s visit to Türkiye has opened a new vista in the flurry of global recognition and prestige which his ongoing economic reforms have attracted to Nigeria,” the group said, adding that Nigeria should leverage the visit to pursue the new bilateral trade target of $5 billion.
Beyond trade, the group welcomed the security cooperation agreement signed during the visit, describing it as a timely and strategic step in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and banditry.
TDF recalled that President Tinubu had pledged, following the Nigeria–United States security cooperation agreement in December 2025, to continue seeking international defence partnerships to tackle insecurity.
“It is gratifying to note that by signing a security pact with his Turkish counterpart, President Tinubu has made good that promise,” the statement said.
According to the group, the commitment by both leaders to deploy resources against terrorism in Nigeria and the Sahel region would reinforce ongoing security efforts and enhance Nigeria’s defence capabilities.
The forum further situated the agreement within a historical context, recalling that military and trade relations between Nigeria and Türkiye date back to the era of the Ottoman Empire.
It expressed confidence that Türkiye’s involvement in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts would strengthen President Tinubu’s war against terrorism and consolidate national security.
TDF added that the partnership would exert increased pressure on terrorists and bandits operating across the country, while also helping to counter what it described as the negative religious labeling of insecurity in Nigeria by former United States President Donald Trump.
Overall, the group said the Türkiye visit marked a diplomatic and strategic milestone, capable of delivering tangible economic and security gains for Nigeria if effectively harnessed.
