NIMC to Begin Nationwide Ward-Level NIN Registration February 16
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that it will commence nationwide ward-level enrollment for the National Identification Number (NIN) from Monday, February 16, 2026.
The commission said the move follows a presidential directive mandating it to take NIN registration to the grassroots across the country.
In a statement signed on Wednesday by the Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, NIMC said the exercise is aimed at ensuring that every Nigerian citizen and legal resident, including children and adults, is captured in the National Identity Database.
The statement explained that the enrollment will be conducted free of charge as part of the Federal Government’s renewed hope agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This nationwide exercise is designed to ensure the comprehensive registration of every Nigerian citizen and legal resident, including children and adults, into the National Identity Database,” the commission stated.
NIMC described the ward-level enrollment as a strategic step toward expanding identity inclusion and bringing services closer to the people.
“The ward-level enrolment initiative represents a strategic step towards deepening identity inclusion, decentralizing services, and bringing registration to the ward level, thereby improving accessibility, reducing travel burden, and promoting nationwide participation,” the statement added.
The commission said it has begun engaging stakeholders at the national, state and local government levels to ensure a smooth rollout of the exercise. Sensitisation and awareness campaigns are ongoing to educate the public on the importance and benefits of obtaining the NIN.
According to NIMC, state governments, local government authorities, traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations and faith-based organisations are being consulted to ensure seamless registration in all wards nationwide.
The commission urged Nigerians and legal residents who are yet to enroll to take advantage of the opportunity. It also encouraged members of the public to come out in large numbers to register their children, parents and other family members within their communities.
NIMC said ward enrollment schedules, which will guide the rotational movement of its staff and licensed front-end partners, are available on its official website, www.nimc.gov.ng.
For further inquiries, assistance or complaints, the commission advised the public to contact its toll-free line on 08000616462.
