BPP, ICAN Partner to Strengthen Accountability in Public Procurement

The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and ethical standards in Nigeria’s public procurement system.
The agreement, contained in a statement signed by the Head of Press and Public Relations Unit of BPP, Zira Zakka Nagga, is expected to strengthen public financial management and ensure value for money in government spending.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director-General of BPP, Adebowale A. Adedokun, underscored the importance of collaboration among professional bodies.
“Public procurement is the fulcrum of all professionalism. It brings all professional bodies into an ecosystem that works for the betterment of Nigeria,” Adedokun said.
He explained that the MoU would empower the bureau to report errant accountants to ICAN for disciplinary measures, ensuring that professionals who engage in unethical or corrupt practices are sanctioned appropriately.
On his part, ICAN President, Haruna Nma Yahaya, pledged the institute’s commitment to the partnership, highlighting key focus areas including value for money, strict discipline, national savings and capacity development.
“The reward for hard work is more work,” Yahaya said, expressing confidence that the collaboration would deliver tangible benefits for the country.
The signing ceremony was attended by officials of both organisations, who described the agreement as a major step towards improving integrity and professionalism in Nigeria’s procurement process.
