FRSC Mourns Seven Killed in Keffi–Abuja Highway Crash
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal crash along the Keffi–Abuja Highway that claimed seven lives at the Angwan Jarmi axis.
In a statement signed on Thursday by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal described the incident as tragic and unacceptable, extending condolences to the families of the victims.
He said, “The Corps Marshal extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” he said.
Mohammed added that the incident was painful and devastating, noting that no loss of life on the nation’s highways is acceptable.
Preliminary reports indicated that the crash involved a lone vehicle suspected to have been driven at excessive speed, leading to loss of control after veering into the opposite lane.
FRSC rescue teams were immediately mobilised following distress alerts. However, on arrival at the scene, personnel reportedly encountered heightened tension among some members of the public, including commercial motorcycle operators, which later escalated into a mob attack on the Keffi Unit Command.
While initial findings point to speeding and loss of control as likely causes, the Corps Marshal ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into all circumstances surrounding the crash, including allegations of possible patrol-related factors.
“The Corps will not be hasty in apportioning blame nor dismissive of public concerns. Any personnel found to have acted outside established operational standards will be held accountable in line with the Corps’ regulations,” the statement said.
The Corps Marshal also commended the Nigeria Police Force and the Army for their swift intervention, which helped restore calm and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
He appealed to members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course, warning that violence against rescue and enforcement personnel undermines collective efforts to safeguard lives on the highways.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, fairness and transparency, assuring Nigerians that it would continue working with relevant stakeholders to prevent similar tragedies and strengthen public confidence in its operations.
