NAPTIP to Investigate Sexual Abuse Allegations Linked to Simi

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has announced plans to investigate allegations of child sexual abuse connected to a daycare centre owned by the mother of singer and songwriter Simi.
The move follows intense reactions on social media after old posts from the artiste’s X account resurfaced online. Some users alleged that comments made in 2012 referenced toddlers at her mother’s daycare in a manner they considered inappropriate.
The controversy gained traction shortly after the 37-year-old singer spoke publicly about concerns over sexual assault in Nigeria, particularly in the aftermath of a now-discredited rape claim by a TikTok user, Mirabel.
Following that development, netizens revisited Simi’s old social media posts, sparking fresh debate.
In some of the resurfaced tweets, the singer reportedly made remarks about a young child expressing affection toward her while she worked at the daycare centre. Critics interpreted the comments as suggestive, leading to calls for authorities to probe the matter.
Responding to the backlash, Simi explained that she made the posts at the age of 23 while assisting her mother at the daycare. She insisted that her statements were misinterpreted and manipulated to fit misleading narratives.
“I’ve never been depraved in my life,” she said, adding that she was not a public figure at the time and did not anticipate that her posts would later be subjected to such scrutiny. She maintained that she had nothing to hide and had never engaged in any immoral conduct.
The singer also revealed that her team had begun removing some of the old posts out of consideration for her family, although she initially hesitated to delete them.
In a statement shared on its official Instagram page, NAPTIP said it is committed to thoroughly investigating credible reports of child sexual abuse or misconduct in daycare settings.
“Following recent public discussions and concerns raised regarding alleged incidents of child sexual abuse/misconduct in daycare settings in Nigeria, we are committed to thoroughly investigating credible reports,” the agency stated.
NAPTIP called on anyone with factual information, evidence, direct knowledge, or who may have been affected by the issues referenced in the viral posts to contact the agency confidentially.
The agency stressed that it takes all allegations of child sexual abuse seriously and pledged to investigate every credible claim. As of press time, no formal charges have been announced.
