Troost-Ekong Stranded in Qatar as Airspace Closure Disrupts Flights

Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, is currently unable to leave Qatar following the temporary closure of airspace and suspension of flights triggered by escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The 32-year-old centre-back, who recently signed for Al Ahli SC after ending his stint in Saudi Arabia in January, has been caught up in the regional security lockdown that has disrupted both travel and sporting activities.

According to reports by Soccernet, football operations in parts of the Gulf have been put on hold as authorities respond to growing military hostilities between Iran and Israel. The rising tensions have led to precautionary measures, including the grounding of flights in affected areas, leaving several foreign nationals, including professional athletes, unable to depart.

The latest crisis follows renewed exchanges between Iran and Israel, with Tehran reportedly launching strikes on strategic targets in response to attacks it attributes to the United States and Israel. The unfolding confrontation has heightened security concerns across the Gulf region.

Troost-Ekong’s situation mirrors that of other high-profile footballers in the area. Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of Al-Nassr FC, reportedly left Saudi Arabia overnight amid the escalating crisis. The 41-year-old forward is said to have travelled to Madrid aboard his £61 million Bombardier Global Express private jet as tensions entered a fourth straight day.

While there has been no official statement from Troost-Ekong or his club regarding his travel plans, the broader uncertainty in the region continues to affect routine activities, including international travel and domestic football competitions.

Authorities in the Gulf are closely monitoring developments as diplomatic efforts intensify to prevent further escalation.
