Atletico Lose Copa Del Rey Final to Real Sociedad Despite Lookman’s Goal

Ademola Lookman

Ademola Lookman was on target for Atletico Madrid, but it was not enough to stop them from falling to Real Sociedad in a dramatic Copa del Rey final decided by penalties.

The encounter ended 2-2 after regulation and extra time, before Sociedad edged the shootout 4-3 at the Estadio de La Cartuja to claim the trophy.

Sociedad made a blistering start, taking the lead just 15 seconds into the match through Ander Barrenetxea, whose header set a new record for the fastest goal in the competition’s final.

Atletico responded through Lookman, who slotted a low effort into the far corner to restore parity. The goal saw the Super Eagles forward join Finidi George as one of the few Nigerians to have scored in a Copa del Rey final.

The Basque side regained the lead when Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the penalty spot, but Atletico fought back once more, with Julian Alvarez producing a stunning strike to make it 2-2 and force extra time.

With neither side able to find a winner after 120 minutes, the match went to penalties, where Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro proved decisive, making crucial saves to hand his team victory.

The win marks Sociedad’s sixth Copa del Rey title and their first in six years, capping a memorable campaign for the club and their manager, Pellegrino Matarazzo.

For Atletico, attention now shifts to European competition, as Diego Simeone’s side prepare for a UEFA Champions League semi-final clash against Arsenal, with hopes of reaching another continental final still alive.
