Hasty weather in Northern Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has alerted residents across parts of the northern region to expect hazy atmospheric conditions on Saturday, urging individuals with respiratory challenges to take precautionary measures.

In its daily weather outlook issued on Friday for Saturday, March 7, 2026, the agency said sunny skies combined with hazy weather would dominate much of the northern region throughout the day.

According to the forecast, the morning hours are expected to begin with bright conditions across the region, though visibility may be affected by suspended dust particles in the atmosphere.

Hazy weather typically occurs when tiny particles such as dust, smoke or pollutants remain suspended in the air, reducing visibility and lowering air quality.

These fine particles; often referred to as particulate matter can easily be inhaled and irritate the respiratory system. Health experts note that exposure to such polluted air may lead to coughing, throat irritation, eye discomfort and breathing difficulties, particularly for people with asthma or other lung diseases.

NiMet noted that the weather pattern is likely to persist into the afternoon and evening, with the region continuing to experience “sunny skies with hazy atmospheric conditions throughout the forecast period.”

Across the North-Central states, the agency predicted a mix of sunshine and cloud patches, particularly over parts of Benue State, Kogi State and Kwara State.

Other areas in the region are expected to experience sunny conditions accompanied by hazy atmosphere both in the morning and later in the day.

In the southern part of the country, NiMet projected a relatively cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine in the early hours.

Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected in parts of Ogun State, Oyo State, Osun State, Edo State, Ekiti State, Lagos State, Delta State, Bayelsa State and Rivers State.

The agency also issued a weather advisory, warning residents, especially those with respiratory conditions to remain cautious due to the dusty conditions.

“Individuals with respiratory conditions are advised to take necessary precautions due to the hazy atmospheric conditions over parts of the Northern and Central regions,” the agency said.

NiMet further cautioned that thunderstorms expected in parts of the southern region later in the day could be accompanied by strong winds, urging residents to remain vigilant.

The agency also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather information to support effective flight planning and safe operations.
