The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has commended the Federal Government’s approval of N48 billion for the rehabilitation and upgrade of engineering workshops and laboratories in 12 universities across the country, describing the initiative as a major step toward strengthening technical education.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, the group said the intervention would significantly improve practical learning and skill acquisition among engineering students in the country’s tertiary institutions.

According to TMV, modernising laboratories and workshops is crucial to preparing Nigerian graduates with the technological and practical competencies required in today’s global economy.

The group noted that the funds are expected to be used to rehabilitate and equip engineering laboratories and workshops with modern, industry-relevant facilities capable of bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

“It is encouraging that the intervention will focus on revitalising engineering and technological faculties in the selected universities,” the statement said.

TMV added that the initiative would support both the upgrading of existing facilities and the construction of new engineering workshops where necessary.

The group further said the investment reflects the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reposition education as a key driver of national development and economic diversification.

It also aligned with the position of the Minister of Education, who described the project as a strategic intervention designed to transform Nigerian universities into centres of innovation, research and practical problem-solving.

TMV noted that the government’s intervention in engineering education complements broader reforms in the education sector.

The group referenced the recent unlocking of $552 million under the HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All Programme, an initiative aimed at accelerating reforms in the country’s basic education system.

According to the group, the programme—co-financed by the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education—is designed to support measurable reforms aligned with the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative.

TMV maintained that the latest investment in university engineering facilities demonstrates a deliberate effort by the federal government to strengthen the country’s education system and equip young Nigerians with skills relevant for industrial growth and technological advancement.
