APC Imposes Tough Conditions on PDP Governor Planning Defection

A serving governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reportedly facing stiff conditions as he weighs plans to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a development that has triggered uncertainty within his political camp.

Sources familiar with the development said the governor had recently initiated contact with the leadership of the APC in Abuja as part of moves to formalise his entry into the ruling party.

However, while party leaders in the nation’s capital were said to be open to discussions, influential APC figures within the governor’s state reportedly believe the party can win the next governorship election without relying on the incumbent.

Investigations revealed that the governor has been confronted with several stringent conditions that could significantly limit his influence should he eventually defect.

Unlike the usual political tradition where a sitting governor who defects becomes the party leader in his state, sources said the APC leadership has made it clear that the governor would not automatically assume that position upon joining the party.

The governor was also reportedly informed that he would not have the privilege of determining who succeeds him in office. Instead, he would be required to work with existing party stakeholders to agree on a candidate ahead of the next governorship race.

Another major condition said to have unsettled his camp is that his loyalists would not receive preferential treatment in the party’s primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A source close to the situation said the development has thrown the governor and his supporters into confusion.

“The governor and his supporters are now in a serious dilemma. The conditions are tough, and there is uncertainty about what will happen to his followers if he moves,” the source said.

According to insiders, some members of the governor’s political structure fear that if the only concession offered to him is a senatorial ticket in 2027, many of his loyalists may be sidelined in the party’s political arrangements.

Despite the concerns, it was gathered that the governor is still lobbying APC leaders in Abuja, insisting that he has significant political value to bring to the ruling party.

At the same time, a section of his supporters is said to be urging him to reconsider the planned defection and remain in the PDP to help strengthen the party’s chances in the state ahead of the next election cycle.

Political observers noted that the state has a history of alternating party control after each political transition, with several APC governorship hopefuls already positioning themselves for the next contest.

Should the governor eventually defect, the PDP could face further erosion of its strength nationwide as the party continues to grapple with internal divisions and shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.
