Kano Pays N300,000 to Families of Uromi Attack Victims One Year After

The Kano State Government has disbursed N300,000 each to families of victims of the Uromi attack in Edo State, one year after the tragic incident that claimed several lives.
The State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, announced the development during a visit to Bunkure Local Government Area, where relatives of the victims gathered.
Waiya said the intervention followed a directive by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after it emerged that an earlier promise made to the victims’ families had not been fulfilled.
According to him, 16 families of those killed received N300,000 each, while survivors of the attack were given N200,000 apiece. Beneficiaries also received two bags of rice as part of the relief package.
He recalled that the governor had earlier visited the affected families alongside his counterpart in Edo State to commiserate with them after the incident, which left about 19 persons dead and several others injured during a mob attack on travellers.
While confirming that Kano State has now fulfilled its pledge, Waiya noted that the Edo State Government had also assured that its compensation package for the victims would be released soon.
“An account has already been opened for the families, and we are expecting that the Edo State Government will release the funds any moment from now,” he said.
The commissioner urged the families to remain patient, assuring them that both state governments were committed to providing support and ensuring justice.
Describing the attack as a “national calamity,” Waiya extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the victims.
He added that a committee earlier set up by the Kano State Government, led by the deputy governor, had been engaging with authorities in Edo State to ensure proper handling of the aftermath.
Waiya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to standing by the victims’ families and providing continued support in the wake of the tragedy.
