Carabao Cup: Man City Beat Arsenal to Lift Ninth Title

Manchester City claimed their ninth Carabao Cup title after a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with young defender Nico O’Reilly emerging as the unlikely match-winner.

The 21-year-old scored twice in the second half to hand City their first triumph in the competition since 2021 and secure another piece of silverware under manager Pep Guardiola.

The final began on a lively note, with Arsenal creating the first real chance. City goalkeeper James Trafford was called into action early, producing a series of saves to deny the Gunners and keep the contest goalless.

Despite dominating possession for much of the first half, City struggled to break through Arsenal’s defence, while Mikel Arteta’s side relied on set-pieces and quick transitions but failed to convert their chances.

The breakthrough came in the 60th minute when a cross from Bernardo Silva slipped through the hands of Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, allowing O’Reilly to head home from close range.

Just four minutes later, the youngster struck again, finishing off a well-delivered cross from Matheus Nunes to double City’s advantage and put the game beyond Arsenal’s reach.

Arsenal pushed for a response, with Riccardo Calafiori coming closest, but his effort rattled the post as City held firm to seal the win.

The victory marks a return to form for City, who had endured a brief dip with three matches without a win prior to the final. It also underlines their continued dominance in domestic cup competitions under Guardiola, who becomes the first manager to win the Carabao Cup five times.

For Arsenal, the defeat represents a major setback in what had been a promising season. The North London side remain in contention in the Premier League and other competitions, but the loss ends their hopes of securing a historic quadruple.

Both teams have been among the standout performers in England this season. City are once again pushing for top honours domestically and in Europe, while Arsenal have shown consistency in the league, maintaining a strong position in the race for Champions League qualification.

In the end, however, it was City’s experience and clinical finishing that made the difference on the big stage, as they added yet another trophy to their growing collection.
