Ibadan Residents Defy Danger, Scoop Fuel From Fallen Tanker

Residents of Ibadan were seen scooping fuel from a fallen tanker along the busy Academy–Iwo Road Expressway, raising fresh concerns over the dangerous trend that has claimed many lives in the past.
The incident came to light over the weekend after a video surfaced online showing people rushing to the scene with containers, collecting fuel from the overturned tanker without considering the risk of fire or explosion.
Eyewitnesses said the tanker fell along the road, drawing a crowd within minutes. Instead of keeping a safe distance, many moved closer to scoop fuel before emergency responders could arrive.
This, has led to tragic outcomes across Nigeria in the past. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), at least 411 people died in 2024 while scooping fuel from fallen tankers. Officials say the real danger is that spilled fuel can ignite at any moment, turning such scenes into deadly disasters.
Similar incidents have continued this year. In January, residents were also seen scooping diesel from a fallen tanker at Liverpool Bridge in Apapa, Lagos, before authorities secured the area.
Reacting to the development, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Lanre Issa-Onilu, condemned the act and described it as risky and avoidable. He called for stronger laws to stop the practice and protect lives.
He also urged Nigerians to put safety first, warning that no short-term gain is worth the risk of losing lives.
Authorities continue to advise people to stay away from accident scenes involving fuel tankers and allow emergency officials to handle the situation safely.
