‘Don’t Start What You Can’t Finish,’ Wike Tells Makinde at PDP NEC

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday delivered a blunt warning to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, cautioning against engaging in political battles without the capacity to sustain them.
Wike spoke during the 107th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party, where he criticised what he described as “unfortunate” claims allegedly made by Makinde concerning meetings involving him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“It’s unfortunate a fight you cannot fight, you started,” Wike said, in a remark that drew attention from party members at the gathering.
The former Rivers State governor also took a broader swipe at the conduct of politics within the party, warning against treating it as a business enterprise.
“They are two different things. You wanted money; I wanted power. Stay where you are as a contractor. Politics is not a Shell contract… I went into politics to have power,” he added.
Wike used the platform to caution members of the PDP against unnecessary confrontations, stressing that political engagement requires strategy and discipline rather than mere bravado.
Looking ahead to the party’s upcoming national convention, he issued a stern warning to members, urging them to demonstrate commitment or risk being sidelined.
“After this NEC meeting, anybody that doesn’t show commitment to the convention should not come back and claim loyalty. I will not accept that,” he said.
The FCT minister also called for unity within the party, urging leaders to prioritise reconciliation efforts while maintaining sincerity in their engagements.
