Kano Woman Who Delivered Quintuplets Dies After Childbirth Complications

A woman in Kano State, identified as Hafsatu Yusuf, has died shortly after giving birth to quintuplets at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

The development was confirmed on Thursday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry of Health, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, who said the woman passed away in the early hours of the day.

According to him, the mother died around 2 a.m. following complications arising from childbirth, particularly excessive bleeding that could not be controlled despite medical efforts.

“She had been bleeding since after delivery, and all efforts by doctors to control the situation were unsuccessful,” he said.

The quintuplets; three boys and two girls were successfully delivered at the hospital and are currently alive and receiving medical care. Health officials confirmed that the babies are in stable condition and under close supervision by medical personnel.

The death has cast a shadow over what was initially a rare and celebrated birth, coming barely a day after the Kano State Government announced it had taken responsibility for the medical care of both the mother and her newborns.

In an earlier statement, the ministry had indicated that the delivery was successful and that both the mother and the babies were placed under special care following the birth.

K/Na’isa disclosed that the deceased has since been buried according to Islamic rites at her residence in Hotoro, Kano.

He also appealed to members of the public to support the surviving babies, particularly with essential items needed for their care.

“We are appealing to the public to support the babies with milk and other essential items,” he added.

The husband of the deceased, Malam Salisu Nufi’u, had earlier expressed gratitude to the state government for its intervention, describing it as timely and supportive during the critical period.

The Kano State Government, while reacting to the incident, reiterated its commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare across the state, with a focus on reducing complications and mortality associated with childbirth.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about maternal health in Nigeria, especially in cases involving multiple births, which often require intensive medical monitoring and specialised care.
