Gay Rights Activist Edafe Okporo, Husband Announce End of Marriage

Nigerian-born LGBTQ+ rights activist, Edafe Okporo, and his husband, Nicholas Giglio, have announced the end of their marriage after three years together.

The couple disclosed this in a joint message shared via Instagram in the early hours of Saturday, confirming that they have filed for a no-fault divorce.

Okporo, who is based in the United States, described the decision as mutual, noting that both parties are committed to handling the separation with honesty and respect.

“Nick and I have made the mutual decision to end our marriage. We have officially filed for a no-fault divorce by mutual agreement. This has been a hard decision, and we are taking the time and space we need to move through it with honesty and respect,” he wrote.

He further appealed for privacy and understanding as they begin a new phase of their lives, thanking supporters for their continued goodwill.

“We ask for grace as we navigate this next chapter. You’re welcome to continue holding space for both of us, together or separately. Thank you for your love and support,” the statement added.

The couple got married in September 2022.

Okporo, who hails from Warri in Delta State, is the Executive Director of Refuge America, a group that provides support and resettlement assistance for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in the United States.

The announcement has since drawn reactions on social media, with many expressing support for both individuals as they navigate the separation.
