NDC Gains Momentum in Bayelsa as Governor’s Kinsman Defects with Supporters
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has recorded a major boost in Bayelsa State following the defection of a grassroots political figure, Comrade Doubara Kumokou, alongside thousands of his supporters.
Kumokou, popularly known as “Youth Governor” and said to be a kinsman of the state governor, formally joined the party at its secretariat in Yenagoa, in a move seen as strengthening the party’s structure at the grassroots.
The development comes barely 24 hours after members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Labour Party (LP) in the Federal Capital Territory defected to the NDC, signalling a wave of political realignments across the country.
Speaking at the event, Kumokou expressed appreciation to Seriake Dickson, whom he described as the national leader of the party, for his role in shaping Bayelsa’s political landscape.
He said, “I and my supporters have carefully followed the leadership direction of the NDC and we are convinced that this is the right political family to align with. We are fully committed to the ideals of the party and will work tirelessly to advance its vision in Bayelsa State.”
Kumokou attributed his decision to join the NDC to what he called the “credible leadership and consistent performance” of Dickson, adding that the party represents integrity and people-focused governance.
In a statement signed by the Director of NDC New Media Team in Bayelsa, Gabriel Ukuta, the defection was described as part of a growing political shift in the state.
According to the statement, the entry of Kumokou and his supporters is expected to boost the party’s grassroots appeal and influence ahead of future elections.

Receiving the new members, the state chairman of the party, Hon. Dauperebo Ikuromo, described the development as “timely and strategic.”
“The Nigeria Democratic Congress is fast becoming the heartbeat of Bayelsa politics. This defection is not just symbolic; it reflects the growing trust of the people in our vision and commitment to service,” Ikuromo said.
He assured the defectors of full integration into the party and hinted that more prominent figures may join the party in the coming days.
Political observers say the latest move could reshape the balance of power in Bayelsa as the NDC continues to expand its base and position itself as a strong contender in the state’s political space.
