EFCC Raids ‘Yahoo Academy’ in Abuja, Arrests 31 Suspects
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have uncovered an alleged internet fraud training centre in the Federal Capital Territory, arresting 31 suspects during a sting operation in Abuja.
The suspects were apprehended on Thursday at a facility located in Becki Estate, Karu, where they were reportedly undergoing training in cyber fraud.
According to a statement issued by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the suspects include two suspected ringleaders and several trainees.
Oyewale said the operation led to the recovery of incriminating items, including mobile phones, 18 laptop computers and other electronic gadgets believed to have been used for fraudulent activities.
“The suspects, comprising two kingpins and a number of recruits, were arrested while receiving tutorials on internet fraud,” he said.

Preliminary investigations by the anti-graft agency revealed that some of the trainees were allegedly lured from Benue State under the guise of legitimate job opportunities, only to be recruited into the illegal operation upon arrival.
“Upon settling in, they were provided with communication devices, computers and software, setting the stage for their training in cyber fraud,” Oyewale stated.
The EFCC further disclosed that the operators of the facility enforced strict control measures over the recruits, including restricting their movement and confiscating their personal phones to prevent external communication.
“To ensure compliance, the recruits were housed within the facility, with their movements confined to the premises and their phones taken away, effectively isolating them from the outside world,” he added.

The agency also alleged that the trainees were subjected to harsh disciplinary measures.
“Corporal punishment, including physical assault, was reportedly meted out to those considered disobedient,” Oyewale said.
The EFCC confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
